Athena's Rose

He winked his commands

along my body until he reached

the iron curve of my hips.

A cutting from Athena’s rose

I owned the yes of my blooming

and the thorny reach of my no.

He thought he’d dance me through

the devil’s garden only to find

he wasn’t given the power to lead.

The Wolf Howls in Red

I screamed into the wind,

“Give me your worst,

 bits of hell

purchased with a liar’s tongue.

The storm is always with me

even when the moon

tangles my hair with dreams.”

I was born in the womb

of a dead valentine,

a loveless lullaby hummed

through the throat of delirium.

Today is another matchstick

on the bonfire I breathe,

the scar chasing me with

its knife I won’t let cut me.

I will be strong even if I fall.

Every weakness in me will find

its shaman to pulse my spirit

with survival.

I was inspired by the image and a thunderstorm.

Mulier Tenaces

Seamstress
@catschappach

Born rebel with my own ribs I stitched
every truth I captured with my teeth
to my womb song of feminism.

Not every fang is poison or every scripture truth.
A serpent opened my eyes when words spoke blindness.
Scales weigh the lies on a tongue.

Spin me wild and wild I’ll be…Tenacity of Freedom…

Nothing Better Than a Woman's Eye

America's first female photojournalist
c. 1904

There’s nothing better
than a woman’s eye.
She’s been looking through
barriers since Eden’s apple
produced its first snake oil.

Every drop
of submission
placed in her ear
brings a little more
light to her vision.

There’s nothing better
than a woman’s eye
to see what will be
through the repressive
words of you can’t.

Temple Moan

Shadow prayers steeple hands
into a temple moan of unknown tongues.

There’s no veil, no shaman, no holy path
through pen strangled words to light switch
the tunnel of unanswerable.

Alone in the heartbeat thump I become
one with freedom, move from the house
horror built into the ancient strength of woman.

Peace supplants war.
