First Knife Cut of Ritual

Related image

Memories sit at the head
of the table waiting for the
first knife cut to announce
the ritual has begun.

Never a family to worship fowl
they sacrifice appetite to traditional
and carve Thanksgiving into turkey leftovers.

Basted in what is expected they
mimic gratitude prayers, and internalize
their abhorrence of consuming
slivers of congealed cranberries.

  1. That sort of internalization might leave a belly aching...

  2. 'Basted in what is expected..' indeed. Every year I open a can of cranberry sauce, and every year, I throw it away with barely a spoonful tasted. But it has to be there, for some unknown reason. I like the tongue-in-cheek quality of this Susie, as well as the way you've summed up so much programming passed off as 'tradition.' We are good little consumers here, yes? Thanks so much for playing, and enjoy the leftovers. I find that pie helps. ;_)

    1. Thank you... There are lots of wonderful traditions, but how often do we speak of the reason we do something or try to stop doing what we really don't like?

  3. Hah! Yeah, basked in what is expected. That's just it.
I've never made a turkey (vegetarian) and this year we decided not to celebrate at all but even given our desire not to participate, I still found myself cooking... sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, squash, cranberries (though not from a can) Oh well. It was delicious anyway!

    1. Oh, we do what we do sometimes because there seems to be that pull within us to do it. Or is it merely guilt?
