BE

She tinkers with art,
turns wine into ink,
sings with a hoarse growl
louder than rejection.

Barefoot is her couture because
calloused soles carry more trust
than the pinched toe wobble walk
of heels chasing cliques.

Gossip and drab bore.
She’d rather BE herself than join the cloning.
Crazy keeps bullshit from her door.

  2. Ha. Working in the high school, I see the early cloning process - and it is sad. Though for many that continues right on into adulthood. It is much harder to try and be someone else than the just be yourself.

    1. There is so much pressure to be one of the herd. I have often pen told, "You're weird." I find that is one of my proudest accomplishments.

    hallelujah!

this is such a brilliant line - so powerful and grounded - but then, the entire poem is empowering and so much a declaration, a knowing - gorgeous!

  4. I love that phrase, 'turns wine into ink,' as well as the entire thrust of the poem--self-appreciation without arrogance, strength without coercion, acceptance without fear. You are writing so well, Susie--such a pleasure to have you at the 55, and may your weekend kick any ass it wants to.

    1. Thank you. I have had wonder examples of how to write from those I have been privileged to read in the garden at Real Toads.

    1. Yes! Harmony comes from voices singing different notes. That is the beauty of the music of life.
