Black Coffee and a Tin Halo

Coffee black, cactus tongue sharp,
and a tin halo makes Louise
Mother Mary of the only
Wal-Mart that can brag
bear spray is their biggest seller.

It doesn’t take an Einstein to guess
Kodiak Alaska wasn’t named after
a cattle ranch in Texas or a chicken farm in Arkansas.

Up in the chill where remote
doesn’t describe an armchair controller,
Louise is the best glitter on ice for miles.

She brags the doll ambulance (make-up section)
is where a lady can paint her cheeks tulip pink
to tease a man into believing she’ll stay longer
than a bikini strut on Homer Spit Beach in January.

No one really knows how Louise ended up in Kodiak.
She doesn’t talk about her past or wink and flirt about the future.
It seems to the locals she’s a unicorn in the rough,
a salty angel with a southern drawl who dropped
her wings in the Wal-Mart parking to hold court
in a kingdom where you can buy a gun and plastic ivy.

I really don't know how my poetry arrived in a Wal-Mart in Kodiak, Alaska, but my muse took me there.  So I did some research, (yes, poets do research), and I found my Louise. :)

Little Shrines and Madness

Hello…

“We’re all mad here. You’re mad.
You must be or you wouldn’t be here.”
Cheshire Cat- Alice in Wonderland.

I have poetry books
in every room, formed,
deformed, hardback,
paper, from Edgar Allan Poe
to my scribblings.

There’s not a day that goes
by I don’t hollow out a space
in my ribs for another poem.

When I think about it, my
poetry collections are little
shrines because there’s
always a candle close, some
incense, and a prayer for
a bit of talent to slip into my ink.

I skip prayers when
It comes to poetry forms.
Most of the time when
I attempt to write one it feels
like I’m forcing myself
into a push up bra that’s
never going to work.

Oh,
 and those
shrine rooms
have no mirrors.
I do enough digging inside
 myself reading and scribbling
I don’t need to peer into glass
to see my madness.

The B(itch) of Beige ~ Sarcasm Intended

I don’t like herds
or sheep parkas
that smell like gaslighting.

The crazy of a pencil puppet
is the ride on the dotted line
too often leads to becoming a robot.

I’m not so naïve as to not understand
I must occasionally allow myself
to appear to be a hostage of conformity.
You know, dress in faux beige so I can
pretend I never read a book or understand
history has a catalogue of too often repeated.

Oh, if I were truly a Bitch Goddess
I’d slap minds with my opinions
until my tantrums carved them
into my likeness, but I can be wrong.
(I’m so humble.)
So, I acknowledge my broom may
have a few loose straws that
require attention.

It is difficult to walk the tight rope
between unhinged and a bit stable.
I do wear sensible shoes though,
and apply my sarcasm only when needed.

When I write, I'm never sure where I will
end up, but I chose the word beige and got curious
about its symbolism. My fingers rushed to Google
to discover there is much to know about beige.

Symbolism Of Beige
Symbolically, the color beige brings
a sense of energy and strength –
a trustworthy, dependable kind.
This is due to intellectual abilities,
 wisdom, ideas and knowledge.

Hmmm, Obama's suit.

A Headline East of Denver

We were a headline
east of Denver when
April joined us at the hip.

She was selling rain
by the bucket, and
bragging May
wouldn’t bloom
without her.

Two briefcases
closer to embracing
random we took
April’s hint and
curled into the
want ads to see
if Cupid had a condo
available next month.

Ritual of Irony

She talks to the peonies
knowing they can’t respond.
Her red painted lips whisper
secrets into the petals
 and watches every blush
 as she tucks them
 into bouquets.
It is her
 annual
ritual
of
irony
where
she
invites
 guests
to her
 spring
filled
 rooms to admire
the  beauty of blossoms
honeycombed with  her confessions.
