If There's a Spotlight in Hell (Day 1 NaPoWriMo)

How do I glitter empty
when leather words
are all I hear?

You know the kind,
cracked, broken,
overused, beyond repair.

I waver between rage
and whatever while staring
into my coffee cup searching
for a crystal ball in the caffeine.

If there’s a spotlight in hell,
I know a few who would
burn the lightbulb into their image.

There’s not enough school in a politician
to read a room or hear an opinion
that hasn’t fallen out of their own tongue.

I’m having a moment among many.
Today I’m feeling like the news is
filled with a pack of rabid children
I’d like to chase with a needle
so they won’t put their teeth
in anyone else.

  1. Me, too, Susie. "That hasn't fallen out of their own tongue" is so apt. These people do not listen or hear. The rabid children is such a good description of the lads leaving wreckage in their wake. Their practice on video games has trained them to lay waste.

  2. We live in insane times and I have to limit how much of it I expose myself to, or I would lose my mind, or at least my composure.
I was noticing while looking at baseball posts on FB that soooo many people are just so darn gullible and will believe anything. I saw a couple of posts attacking my Tigers' manager for crazy made-up reasons. One had him blaming a loss on players being distracted by Dodger cheerleaders. First, they don't have cheerleaders, and second, the picture showed a Saints (football) cheerleader with the Saints emblem on her sweater. Nevertheless, the commenters almost all fell for it and were outraged over this easily debunked post about a thing that never happened. Even when shown it was fake, they dug in and doubled down with astonishing stubborn stupidity. It made me start to understand how Dump won the election. There are just so many mentally lazy, gullible, low-information, locked-in dopes out there.

  3. You have a knack for pulling me right in with your first lines every time.

  4. That first line is all it took to hook me right into this "spotlight in hell."
