Refusing Cinnamon

She was a southern diamond
polished with hairspray
and expectations.

“Girl, stand tall when looking down.
You come from generations
of carrying vinegar on sugar tongues.

Sell them what they think they want
and steal what they need.
It’s only apple pie politics.”

Daddy cut her from the will
because she wouldn’t live the recipe.

  1. This is a smooth and sweet and sour read, Susie. The apple pie politics seem about the same as politics as usual--a bit oversold and over-stole, as it were, on the larger front, perhaps. Last lines here sew it all up with a golden thread and steel needle. A compact and kickass 55 that tells it like is. Thanks as always for playing and bringing your best.

  2. Love the phrasing...'hairspray and expectations', 'vinegar on sugar tones' Apple pie politics indeed.

  3. I truly love this 55 for the reasons Joy and Paul related--but also because it speaks to just about every woman of the South of breeding and education I have ever met. Sugar on the tongue ever in need of knowing what the tone the words are delivered in.

  4. I love everything about this, especially the fact that daddy will have to eat its own nasty meal... alone.
