rain threatens the sky
and i wonder how
long the moon can swim
before it drowns in the
love sonnets pooling
on my lips

alone sits on a windowsill
begging a warm hand
to break the chill…
i fold a verse conjured
from dead poets into
his palm and whisper,
“love stays when you
give it away”

i melt into the shadow of echoes…
there’s no rest in a city of open wounds

  1. WOW! I am gob-smacked by your firsdt stanza. Had to catch my breath before approaching the second. A fantastic poem. That last line is killer.

  2. Wonderful (if piercing) poem. I like the way you have made the scattering of poems into falling rain.

  6. The first stanza is stunning, Susie, especially:
    '...i wonder how
    long the moon can swim
    before it drowns in the
    love sonnets...'
I also love the phrase 'alone sits on a windowsill'.

  7. Oh my god this is beyond beautiful!💞 I LOVE the opening lines and was immediately drawn to the image of the moon "before it drowns in the love sonnets pooling on my lips." Thank you so much for writing to the prompt, Susie 💞

  8. as already noted, the first stanza is just amazing - it totally draws us down and in ... and then, well, I naturally held my breath, waiting .... for ... I was sure what? But "kapow" - what a gripping second stanza opening line. And it just unfolds, billows out and into a fleshing of a form, where this haunted and haunting, ghostly/ghosted conversation takes place. And the ending, is just so perfect for this very moody, yet beautiful piece.

  9. "alone sits on a windowsill' and the idea of folding a dead poets verse is amazing. And the wisdom in that last stanza... Gorgeous.
